WOODBURY, NJ — A Glassboro man pleaded guilty to theft by unlawful taking after stealing cash from a patient while working as an emergency medical technician.
Antoni Simmons, 44, of Glassboro, entered the guilty plea to a disorderly persons offense before Judge Kevin T. Smith on Monday, Gloucester County Prosecutor Andrew B. Johns announced.
Simmons was sentenced to one year of probation and must pay restitution to the victim.
He also forfeited his employment with Gloucester County EMS and is subject to a permanent bar from public employment in New Jersey.
On April 30, Simmons was dispatched to Newfield to provide medical aid to a patient while working as an EMT for Gloucester County.
During his time at the scene, Simmons rummaged through the victim’s purse and stole approximately $220 in cash, according to documents filed in the case.
The victim discovered the cash was missing from her purse later that day.
An investigation by the Major Crimes Unit of the Prosecutor’s Office uncovered surveillance video that showed Simmons going through the victim’s purse and taking the cash.
The Franklin Township Police Department assisted in the investigation.
Franklin Unger, of Haddon Heights, represented Simmons.
