VINELAND, NJ — A woman was sentenced to eight years in prison for a fatal motor vehicle crash that resulted in the deaths of two people.
Malexus Coleman, 30, of Vineland, was sentenced on Oct. 10.
The crash occurred on Feb. 10, 2023, at the intersection of South Delsea Drive and College Drive.
Gary Lawson, 76, and Diane Lindquist, 73, both of Millville, were killed in the crash.
The investigation showed that a Ford Taurus operated by Lawson was making a left-hand turn to travel westbound on College Drive when it was struck by a Dodge Durango operated by Coleman, who was traveling southbound on Delsea Drive.
According to data obtained from Coleman’s vehicle, she was traveling at 84 to 85 mph about five seconds prior to the collision.
About one-and-a-half seconds before the impact, Coleman’s vehicle was traveling at approximately 64 mph.
The speed limit in that area of South Delsea Drive is 45 mph.
The investigation showed that had Coleman been operating her vehicle between 45 to 55 mph, Lawson’s vehicle would have safely executed the turn and avoided the collision.
Coleman was indicted by a Cumberland County grand jury on Nov. 20, 2024, for two counts of second-degree vehicular homicide.
On July 14, Coleman pleaded guilty before the Honorable Niki Arittier, J.S.C., to two amended charges of second-degree violation of law intended to protect public health and safety with a recommended sentence of eight years on each charge to run concurrent to one another.
