EAST BROOKFIELD, MA — A driver was airlifted to a hospital with serious injuries after crashing into a tree Friday night.
East Brookfield Fire and EMS were dispatched to 184 West Sturbridge Road at 9:33 p.m. for a motor vehicle accident.
Callers reported a single vehicle had struck a tree, the vehicle was on fire and the unconscious driver was trapped inside.
East Brookfield police, along with Brookfield and State Police, arrived on scene and knocked down flames in the engine compartment with dry chemical extinguishers.
Brookfield EMS was dispatched for advanced life support.
The first fire command officer arrived on scene and requested a medical helicopter as well as Brookfield Fire for additional personnel and tools due to the heavy entrapment of the patient.
After approximately 45 minutes, the patient was extricated from the vehicle.
The driver was flown to UMass Memorial Medical Center with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
