WEST HAVEN, CT — Police are working to relocate a coyote after the animal chased several people near the high school.

The West Haven Police Department received multiple reports of coyote sightings in several areas of the city, with most occurring near the high school.

No injuries were reported from the incidents.

Police are working with animal control and the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection to assist with the safe relocation of the coyote.

Authorities said coyotes are common in Connecticut and are generally not a threat to people, but they are wild animals and can become aggressive.

Police advised residents not to feed or approach coyotes, keep pets indoors or on a leash, and secure garbage cans and remove outdoor food sources.

Anyone who sees a coyote should make loud noises or wave their arms to scare it off, police said.

Residents are asked to report any aggressive or sick-looking animals to the West Haven Police Department.
