CLIFTON, NY — New York State Police have identified two people who died in a structure fire on Overlook Avenue.

James W. Carlisle, 60, of Newton Falls, and Michael J. Carlisle, 36, of Newton Falls, were found dead inside the residence after firefighters extinguished the blaze.

An autopsy performed Wednesday at Canton-Potsdam Hospital by Forensic Pathologist Dr. Scott F. Lapoint determined both men died from inhalation of products of combustion.

The manner of death was ruled accidental.

State Police responded to the fully engulfed structure fire at approximately 5:50 a.m. Tuesday, with reports of possible entrapment.

The Star Lake and Cranberry Lake Fire Departments arrived on scene and worked to extinguish the fire.

Once inside the residence, the New York State Fire Investigator and firefighters discovered the two deceased individuals.

A third occupant, Shelly L. Carlisle, 57, of Oswegatchie, escaped the residence but sustained severe burns.

She was initially transported to Canton-Potsdam Hospital and later transferred to Upstate University Hospital, where she remains in critical condition.

The St. Lawrence County Coroner responded to the scene and ordered the removal of the deceased.

State Police spoke with the New York Fire Investigator and determined the fire was accidental and showed no signs of suspicious activity.

The incident remains under investigation by the New York State Police and the New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control.
