Man charged with vehicular assault in Merrick

MERRICK, NY — A 45-year-old man faces multiple charges after allegedly striking a pedestrian and a parked postal vehicle while impaired by drugs Friday morning.

Jeffrey Butt, of Freeport, was driving a 2025 black Chevrolet eastbound on Merrick Road near Merrick Avenue when the collision occurred at 10:40 a.m. Oct. 10, according to Nassau County police.

Butt struck a 50-year-old man and a parked United States Postal Service vehicle, police said.

The victim suffered serious injuries and was transported to an area hospital in stable condition.

Butt was taken to an area hospital with minor injuries.

An investigation indicated Butt was operating his vehicle while impaired by drugs, police said.

He was found to be in possession of a substance believed to be cocaine and pills believed to be oxycodone, according to police.

Butt was arrested without incident and charged with driving while ability impaired by drugs, assault 2nd degree, vehicular assault 2nd degree, reckless driving, criminal possession of a controlled substance 5th degree and two counts of criminal possession of a controlled substance 7th degree.
