Burke crash kills 1, driver charged with DUI death resulting

BURKE — Vermont State Police responded to a single vehicle rollover crash on Mountain Road near Sherburne Lodge Road at approximately 10:53 p.m. Oct. 10.

The passenger, Whit Steen, 21, of Lyndon, was ejected from the vehicle and transported to UVM Medical Center via DHART helicopter with life-threatening injuries.

Steen later died from his injuries.

The operator, Luke Dudas, 21, of Lyndon, was transported to Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital with minor injuries.

Dudas was processed for suspicion of DUI at the hospital before being released and taken into custody.

He was transported to the Vermont State Police Barracks for processing.

The preliminary investigation indicates the 2018 Tesla Model S was traveling east on Mountain Road when it went off the south side of the road and collided with several trees before overturning.

Steen was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, while Dudas was wearing his seatbelt.

Alcohol and speed are believed to be factors in the crash.

Dudas faces charges of DUI death resulting, gross negligent operation with death resulting, and providing false information to law enforcement.

Vermont State Police were assisted on scene by Lyndonville Police Department, Lyndonville Rescue, East Burke Fire Department and West Burke Fire Department.
