CANDIA — One person was seriously injured Wednesday night when two vehicles struck the same moose on Route 101.
At 8:10 p.m. Oct. 8, State Troopers assigned to the Troop A barracks responded to a report that two vehicles had struck a moose on Route 101 near mile marker 68.
Troopers determined that the driver of a Mazda 3 was traveling eastbound when the car struck a moose.
The moose then crossed the median and entered the westbound lanes, where it was struck by a Kia Sportage.
The driver of the Mazda was not injured.
An adult passenger in the Kia was transported to Elliot Hospital for treatment of serious injuries.
Both vehicles were towed from the scene due to the extent of damage.
The moose was euthanized at the scene due to injuries from both collisions.
Route 101 westbound was temporarily closed while debris from the crash was cleared from the road.
Troopers were assisted by members of Candia Fire and Rescue.
State police said there is increased wildlife activity during the fall season, including the crossing of roads and highways.
