1 min read

BOSTON — A resident fell victim to a law enforcement imposter scam in which the suspect falsely claimed to be a member of the Boston Police Department, authorities said Wednesday.

Officers assigned to District C-11 took a report Tuesday of the scam that occurred in Dorchester.

The victim received a phone call from (617) 634-5528, during which the caller identified himself as a Boston Police sergeant and stated that the victim owed money for a court-related matter.

The victim was instructed to send payments through Zelle to additional phone numbers provided by the caller.

The victim sent two separate payments.

The Boston Police Department said it will never call and request money, banking information, or electronic transfers as part of any investigation or court matter.

Police advised residents to be cautious of unsolicited phone calls from individuals claiming to represent law enforcement or government agencies.

Authorities said residents should not send money or share personal information in response to suspicious calls and should verify the legitimacy of callers by contacting the agency directly through an official number.

Community members can report suspicious activity by visiting or calling any Boston Police District, or calling 911 in an emergency.
