EAST MILLINOCKET — A male juvenile was seriously injured Thursday when he was struck by a vehicle on Central Street near Congress Street.
The East Millinocket Police Department and Millinocket Fire Department responded to the accident shortly before 5 p.m.
Millinocket Fire Department personnel arrived almost immediately and provided emergency medical aid to the juvenile.
An off-duty nurse was also rendering aid when fire and EMS crews arrived.
The juvenile was transported to Millinocket Regional Hospital and later transferred by Lifeflight of Maine to Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center with serious injuries.
Preliminary investigation supported by witness statements indicates the juvenile crossed Central Street outside of a designated crosswalk when the collision occurred.
Speed and alcohol are not believed to be factors in the crash.
The incident remains under active investigation.
The Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office Accident Reconstruction Team assisted at the scene.
Central Street remained closed for several hours while the crash was investigated and reconstructed.
Additional assistance was provided by the Maine Warden Service, Baxter State Park Law Enforcement and Millinocket Public Works.
