SPRINGFIELD — Vermont State Police arrested two fugitives in Massachusetts on Sept. 29 following a multi-agency chase that began in Springfield and ended with additional crimes in southern Vermont.
Justin French and Kayla Cabey were taken into custody by Massachusetts State Police in West Springfield after fleeing from Vermont authorities earlier that day.
The arrests came after a nine-day search that began when Vermont State Police issued an initial news release on Sept. 20.
Members of the Vermont Drug Task Force located a vehicle potentially being used by French and Cabey in Springfield on Sept. 29.
Police attempted to stop the vehicle, but the operator failed to comply and sped away from the scene.
A Be on the Lookout alert was issued to law enforcement in southern Vermont.
Brattleboro Police Department members located the vehicle and again attempted to stop it.
The vehicle attempted to elude law enforcement, and police lost contact with it in the Putney area.
A tip from the public reported the vehicle was on a logging road in Putney.
Vermont State Police troopers responded to search for the vehicle.
While searching, troopers received a call reporting a man had been assaulted, his home burglarized, and his cellphone and truck stolen by the assailants.
A BOL was issued for the stolen vehicle.
Massachusetts State Police located the truck and stopped it in West Springfield, taking French and Cabey into custody on outstanding arrest warrants from Caledonia County.
Both suspects face numerous charges in Massachusetts, where they are currently being held.
Investigations into the new crimes that occurred in southern Vermont on Sept. 29 are ongoing, and more charges are expected.
