SOUTH PORTLAND — South Portland police responded to reports of a suicidal man with a handgun on the Southern Maine Community College campus Sept. 30.
Officers were dispatched at approximately 8:30 a.m. to the area of Spring Point Lighthouse for reports of a 51-year-old Westbrook man threatening to commit suicide by handgun.
The man was located in a courtyard on campus near the entrance to the breakwater walkway to Spring Point Lighthouse.
SMCC Security locked down the school while South Portland officers made contact with the man.
South Portland officers assigned to the Southern Maine Regional SWAT Team as crisis negotiators were first on scene and made contact with the subject.
While one negotiator spoke with the man, another contacted him on his cell phone and began a dialogue.
The officers deescalated the situation and convinced the man to surrender peacefully to nearby officers.
The man was transported by South Portland Fire Rescue to an area hospital.
There were no injuries and no criminal charges were filed.
