NEWBURY — A transient was arrested Sept. 28 after jumping into the Connecticut River and swimming for several hours to evade law enforcement.
Jamie Woodman, 45, was taken into custody on charges of resisting arrest after the incident that began at approximately 12:18 p.m. on U.S. Route 5.
Vermont State Police troopers from the St. Johnsbury Barracks initially responded to the area for a report of a wanted person.
Troopers located Woodman at the shoreline of the Connecticut River and discovered he had an extraditable warrant from New Hampshire for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
When troopers attempted to arrest Woodman, he jumped into the river.
Woodman swam down the Connecticut River between New Hampshire and Vermont for several hours while law enforcement from both states established a perimeter along the waterway.
