Boston man arrested in downtown break-in at Going Bananas store

BOSTON — A 24-year-old Roxbury man was arrested Wednesday night after allegedly breaking into a downtown Boston business.

Elvin Clayton was taken into custody at about 10:30 p.m. Sept. 24 outside Going Bananas, located at 65 Salem Street.

Officers assigned to District A-1 responded to a call reporting a breaking and entering in progress.

A caller told dispatch they saw a male suspect wearing a black hoodie and black jeans with graffiti markings attempting to break into the store.

Upon arrival, officers observed a man matching that description crouched in front of the open door.

Clayton was seen stuffing items into his clothing before trying to walk away, according to police.

Officers quickly stopped Clayton and placed him in custody.

A witness told officers the suspect had approached her minutes earlier asking for a screwdriver.

Police recovered items linked to the store, including a sealed box of baseball cards and a box of chocolate concealed inside Clayton’s pants.

Additional items found in Clayton’s jacket included scissors, a fork and a lighter.

A seatbelt cutter was recovered during the booking process.

Clayton is expected to be arraigned in Boston Municipal Court on charges of breaking and entering of a building nighttime and possession of a burglarious instrument.
