Utica man charged in pedestrian crash near high school

UTICA — A 21-year-old Utica man has been charged in connection with a pedestrian crash that seriously injured a woman near Proctor High School last month.

Malik Ismail was charged Sept. 22 with reckless endangerment in the second degree, reckless driving, speeding, speeding in a school zone and failure to exercise due care while operating a motor vehicle.

The crash occurred Sept. 11 on the 1200 block of Hilton Avenue when a vehicle traveling northbound struck a female pedestrian.

The woman suffered serious injuries and was transported by the Utica Fire Department to Wynn Hospital.

Police said their investigation, which included reviewing surveillance video and interviewing witnesses, determined Ismail operated his vehicle in a reckless and dangerous manner.

The crash happened during school dismissal time in a school zone, according to police.
