Haverstraw man charged with kidnapping after screwdriver attack

HAVERSTRAW — A 49-year-old Garnerville man has been charged with kidnapping and weapon possession after allegedly grabbing a woman by the neck and holding a screwdriver to her throat outside a residence.

Eduardo Hernandez was arrested Monday morning following a brief foot chase in Stony Point after fleeing a traffic stop, according to the Haverstraw Police Department.

The incident occurred Sunday at approximately 5:25 p.m. when police were dispatched to a residential address in the Village of Haverstraw.

Officers learned that Hernandez had approached the adult female victim outside a residence, physically restrained her, grabbed her by the neck and held a screwdriver to her throat.

The victim was able to fight off the attacker and call for help.

Witnesses provided responding officers with descriptions of both the suspect and his vehicle.

Police used video surveillance in the area to identify the suspect and issued a countywide alert.

At approximately 9:15 a.m. Monday, investigators located the suspect vehicle in Stony Point.

During the traffic stop, Hernandez fled on foot through a residential neighborhood before being apprehended without incident.

He was transported to the Haverstraw Police Department.

Hernandez has been charged with kidnapping in the second degree, a class B felony; criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree, a class D felony; and criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree, a class A misdemeanor.

The FBI Westchester Safe Streets Task Force, Stony Point Police Department, Rockland County Intelligence Center and Rockland County Sheriff’s Office assisted in the investigation.
