OAK BLUFFS — A 67-year-old Martha’s Vineyard man was arrested Sunday after allegedly threatening to bring a shotgun to Martha’s Vineyard Hospital during a phone call about a medical bill.
Stephen Green called the hospital at approximately 8 a.m. Sept. 14 asking to speak with someone about a bill he received, according to the Oak Bluffs Police Department.
A hospital employee told Green the billing department was closed on Sunday but could assist him on the next business day.
Green then stated he would come to the hospital with a shotgun before hanging up the phone, police said.
The hospital staff member reported the incident to hospital security, who contacted the Oak Bluffs Police Department.
Officers immediately began investigating the threat while attempting to locate Green.
Police determined Green had willfully communicated a threat by telephone that a shotgun would be present at the hospital with the implication it would be used as a deadly weapon against staff, causing fear and anxiety among hospital employees.
Officers contacted Green by phone, and he immediately made incriminating statements and said he made a mistake, according to police.
Green agreed to meet an officer at a business on State Road in Tisbury, where he made additional incriminating statements and was arrested.
He was charged with violating Massachusetts General Law for terroristic threats involving the threatened use of a deadly device.
Green was arraigned Monday in Edgartown District Court with bail set at $300.
