NAUGATUCK — A 42-year-old man has been charged after illegal aerial fireworks he set off during a party caused a garage fire that resulted in a total loss of the structure.

Samol Yann-E of Naugatuck turned himself in to police on Aug. 20 following the June 14 fire behind 422 Field Street.

Police and fire departments responded to multiple 911 calls and found a detached garage fully engulfed in flames, with the fire beginning to spread to the residence.

An investigation by police and the Fire Department’s Office of the Fire Marshal determined the fire started from illegal aerial fireworks being set off by Yann-E during a party at a neighboring property.

The uncontrolled nature of the fireworks led to extensive damage and a total loss of the structure.

No residents or first responders were injured in the incident.

Yann-E was charged with reckless burning, breach of peace in the second degree, and illegal sale, use and possession of fireworks prohibited.

He was released on $10,000 bond and scheduled to appear in Waterbury Superior Court on Sept. 3 at 9 a.m.

Aerial fireworks are illegal in Connecticut.
