NORWALK — A 53-year-old Norwalk man has been arrested in connection with a shooting that wounded a 43-year-old woman on Sept. 9.

Hugo Arturo Avilia-Garcia of 29 Coldspring St. was taken into custody without incident and charged with reckless endangerment in the first degree, assault in the first degree and risk of injury to a child.

Police said they received a call at 11:34 p.m. from Norwalk Hospital reporting that a woman had entered the emergency department with gunshot wounds to her legs.

Initial witness accounts stated the victim and friends were walking on Coldspring Street when she was struck by a bullet, but police said this version proved inaccurate during their investigation.

A search of the area for evidence yielded no findings, according to police.

Investigators later determined the victim was shot by Avilia-Garcia, who is the step-father of the victim’s friend, at 29 Coldspring Street.

Police said Avilia-Garcia drove the victim to Norwalk Hospital after the shooting.

Members of the Norwalk Police Department Detective Bureau executed a search warrant at the residence and recovered a shell casing but did not locate a firearm.

Avilia-Garcia is being held on $500,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 24.
