UTICA — A 13-year-old boy was stabbed in the leg at Donovan Middle School during dismissal Tuesday afternoon, prompting a lockdown and police investigation.

Utica Police and Fire units were dispatched to the school at approximately 2:30 p.m. after the School Resource Officer reported that a juvenile had been stabbed and requested assistance.

The boy suffered an injury to his lower leg that required immediate medical attention.

The Utica Fire Department transported him to Wynn Hospital where his injury was treated.

Police said the injury is not life threatening.

The incident occurred during dismissal, creating an initially chaotic scene that led to the school being placed on lockdown status.

School personnel, police officers and investigators immediately secured the scene and began investigating.

Surveillance video suggests the incident may have occurred in a grassy and wooded area immediately west of the school grounds, but that remains under investigation.

A large hunting-style knife was recovered and appears to have been discarded by one of the involved parties after the incident.

The case has been assigned to the Juvenile Aid Unit.

Police are asking anyone with information to contact the unit at 315-223-3561.
