SOUTH RYEGATE — A 64-year-old Newbury woman died Monday after her electric bicycle was struck by a pickup truck on Scott Highway.
Kathryn Mabey was pronounced dead at Cottage Hospital in Haverhill, New Hampshire, following the 1:07 p.m. crash near the intersection of Scott Highway and Church Street.
Vermont State Police said Mabey was attempting to cross both lanes of travel on her Velotric electric bicycle from the eastbound shoulder into a parking lot when she was struck.
The pickup truck driver, Scott Reed, 65, of Fletcher, North Carolina, was traveling eastbound in a 2024 GMC Sierra when he attempted to swerve around Mabey but struck her bicycle.
Reed was not injured in the crash.
Troopers arrived after fire and EMS personnel and immediately began CPR on Mabey, who was unresponsive at the scene.
The crash occurred under clear weather conditions on dry roads.
Police said the investigation is ongoing but neither impairment nor speed appear to be factors.
Mabey’s bicycle sustained damage to the left side including handlebars, pedal and seat, while Reed’s truck had minor front-end damage to the right front quarter panel and passenger side door.
Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to contact the Vermont State Police St. Johnsbury Barracks at 802-748-3111.
