Fatal crash closes U.S. Route 1 in Woolwich for 4 hours

WOOLWICH — A head-on collision between a pickup truck and box truck on U.S. Route 1 left one person dead and another injured early Friday morning.

The Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office responded to the crash at 4:22 a.m. between the Montsweag Restaurant and the intersection of Mountain Road.

A 2022 Toyota Tundra operated by Alex C. Colson, 38, of Rockland, was traveling north on U.S. Route 1 when it crossed over the centerline into the southbound lane.

A 2003 Freightliner box truck operated by Scott Rice, 60, of Waldoboro, was traveling south and attempted to avoid the collision but was unable to do so.

Both vehicles burst into flames as a result of the collision.

Colson died at the scene from extensive injuries.

Rice was able to exit his vehicle and was transported to Maine Medical Center in Portland with injuries that are not considered life-threatening.

Deputy Alex Faith is investigating the crash, which is being reconstructed by members of the Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office.

Woolwich Fire/Rescue provided emergency medical services and assisted at the scene along with Wiscasset Fire Department and West Bath Fire/Rescue.

The Bath Police Department, Topsham Police Department and Maine State Police Commercial Vehicle Unit also assisted.

U.S. Route 1 was closed for approximately four hours and reopened to traffic at 8:30 a.m.
