WELLFLEET — The Wellfleet Police and Fire Departments were dispatched to Route 6 in the area of Shepley Wood Products for a report of a motor vehicle accident on Tuesday, Sept. 2, at approximately 5:45 p.m.
Upon arrival, it was determined that a 2020 BMW crossover sedan, operated by 60-year-old Carlos Ibarguen of Eastham, was involved in a head-on collision with a 2013 Audi sedan operated by 18-year-old Nauset High School senior Aiden Riggins of Orleans.

The front-seat passenger of the BMW, 73-year-old Robert Erickson of Eastham, was transported to Cape Cod Hospital by the Wellfleet Fire Department with serious injuries.
The operator of the BMW was uninjured.
The preliminary investigation indicates that the BMW crossed over the double-yellow dividing lines and struck the Audi head-on in the eastbound travel lane.
Members of the Truro Police Department, Eastham Police Department, National Park Service, Barnstable County Sheriff’s Office, Eastham Fire Department and Orleans Fire Department assisted at the scene.
The Eastham and Orleans Fire Departments assisted with transporting the injured parties.
An off-duty Orleans firefighter also stopped at the scene and rendered aid until Wellfleet Fire Department personnel arrived.
Eastbound traffic on Route 6 was diverted around the crash scene while emergency crews worked in the area.
With assistance from the Cape Cod Regional Law Enforcement Council Crash Reconstruction Team and the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Office, Carlos Ibarguen, the operator of the 2020 BMW, is being charged with negligent operation of a motor vehicle, marked lanes violation, and operating outside of his license restriction.
A request to suspend Ibarguen’s driver’s license has been submitted to the Registry of Motor Vehicles.
