YONKERS — A 26-year-old Yonkers man has been charged with murder in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred just before 10:30 p.m. on Aug. 31.
Police responded to the area of 27 Ludlow Street on a report of a male who had been shot.
Officers found a 42-year-old man with a gunshot wound to his abdomen.
Emergency medical care was provided at the scene, and the victim was transported to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
The victim has been identified as Felix Santiago, 42, of Yonkers.
Detectives from the Yonkers Police Major Case Squad and Crime Scene Unit processed the scene and investigated.
The investigation revealed the shooting was a targeted incident stemming from a dispute between the suspect and a family member of the victim.
As the suspect walked by the victim, he fired approximately three gunshots, one of which struck the victim in his abdomen and caused his death.
Officers in the Yonkers Police AWARE Crime Control Center located the suspect on security cameras as he fled the scene and relayed his description and location to patrol officers.
Officers from the 3rd Precinct located the suspect and took him into custody without incident.
A 9mm handgun with an extended 30-round magazine was recovered from his person.
The suspect has been identified as Linzell Staggers, 26, of Yonkers.
He is being charged with second-degree murder and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, both felonies.
Police Commissioner Christopher Sapienza said the arrest was made within 15 minutes of the incident, just a few blocks away from the crime scene.
The case is being prosecuted by the Westchester County District Attorney’s Office.
