SOUTH BURLINGTON — Vermont State Police arrested an 18-year-old Massachusetts man on suspicion of driving under the influence after he allegedly caused a three-car crash on Interstate 189 and fled the scene Sunday evening.

Jefferson R. Quinaloa of Brockton, Massachusetts, was driving a 2011 Honda Civic on I-189 near the intersection with Shelburne Road when he struck multiple vehicles at approximately 5:26 p.m., according to police.

Witnesses held Quinaloa at the scene until troopers from the Vermont State Police Williston Barracks arrived.

The crash involved three vehicles in addition to Quinaloa’s Honda, which sustained front-end damage.

Rebecca Bergeson, 48, of Charlotte was driving a 2022 Subaru Outback that sustained rear-end damage, police said.

Bergeson was also operating a 2023 Subaru Crosstrek that sustained rear-end damage in the crash.

Laura Langweiler, 38, of Shelburne was driving a 2023 Subaru Crosstrek that also sustained rear-end damage.

Both Bergeson and Langweiler were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash, according to the police report.

It was unknown whether Quinaloa was wearing a seat belt.

Weather conditions were clear and road conditions were dry at the time of the crash.

Following an investigation, troopers determined Quinaloa had operated a motor vehicle while impaired.
