WOODSTOCK — A Weathersfield man was arrested following a multi-agency law enforcement response and standoff, authorities said.
At about 1:45 a.m. on Aug. 26, Sheriff Ryan Palmer of the Windsor County Sheriff’s Department and Windsor Police officers responded to a reported home invasion on Thrasher Road.
Upon arrival, they found an individual who was bleeding and claimed to have been assaulted.
An investigation determined that a home invasion had occurred earlier at 5742 Route 5 in Weathersfield.
Sheriff Palmer said Walter Douglas Wilkins, 56, of Weathersfield, was identified as the suspect in multiple felonies including kidnapping, assault and robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, and being a prohibited person in possession of firearms.
An arrest warrant was issued for Wilkins on Aug. 28.
At approximately 4:30 p.m. that day, Sheriff Palmer located Wilkins at a residence on Wheeler Camp Road in Weathersfield.
Officials said Wilkins barricaded himself in the home and threatened harm to himself and law enforcement officers.
Windsor County deputies and officers from the Springfield Police Department responded to the scene.
After initial negotiations failed, the Rutland Police Department and Vermont State Police were called to assist.
The Vermont State Police Crisis Negotiation Unit and Tactical Services Unit responded.
Wilkins was taken into custody by the State Police Tactical Services Unit at about 10:30 p.m.
He was transported to the Springfield Police Department for processing and was cited to appear in Windsor County Court on Sept. 2 at 12:30 p.m. to answer to the charges.
Wilkins is being held without bail at Springfield’s Southern State Correctional Facility.
