NORWALK — Norwalk Police have arrested a 26-year-old woman following an incident in which her one-year-old child was found unresponsive in an unattended kiddie pool at a residence on 2 Vollmer Avenue.
On July 12, Officer Vazquez of the Norwalk Police Department Patrol Division responded to a report of an unresponsive child at the address.
Upon arrival, Officer Vazquez was met by family members, who handed him the unconscious, limp, and non-breathing child.
Officer Vazquez performed life-saving measures, including turning the child onto his stomach, positioning the child at a downward angle, and delivering firm back blows.
The child began to vomit water, cleared the airway, and started gasping for air.
Within moments, the child regained consciousness and began to cry.
Norwalk Fire Department and Norwalk EMS arrived on scene and provided further treatment before transporting the child to Norwalk Hospital.
The infant made a full recovery.
A joint investigation by the Norwalk Police Department’s Special Victims Unit and the Department of Children and Families determined that the child had been left unattended in the pool along with another child at the time of the incident.
Following the investigation, an arrest warrant was issued on Aug. 25 for Carla Sanchez, age 26, of 2 Vollmer Avenue.
On Aug. 26, Sanchez turned herself in at the Norwalk Police Department.
She was charged with two counts of risk of injury to a minor.
Bond was set at $50,000.
Her court date is scheduled for Sept. 9.
