West Pawlet man hospitalized with life-threatening injuries in quarry assault

WEST PAWLET — Vermont State Police are investigating an assault that left a 53-year-old man hospitalized with life-threatening injuries at a slate quarry Sunday morning.

Troopers received a report of a suspicious incident at about 9:51 a.m. Aug. 24 at the Newmont Slate Quarry at 720 VT Route 149.

By the time troopers arrived, Mark Ray of West Pawlet had been transported from the scene by medical first responders.

Ray was subsequently transported to Albany Medical Center in New York for treatment of life-threatening injuries.

As of the time of the police report, Ray remains hospitalized.

Preliminary investigation by state police detectives indicated Ray’s injuries likely were the result of an assault.
