West Rutland police seek backpack in shop assault case

WEST RUTLAND — Vermont State Police are asking for the public’s help in locating a backpack that may have been dropped by a suspect in an assault and robbery at a local convenience store.

The incident occurred about 10:45 p.m. Sunday at Stewart’s Shop on Main Street.

Joel R. Gouin, 39, of the Rutland area, has been accused of assault and robbery causing injury, aggravated assault and contempt of court in connection with the case.

The victims were identified as Leanna Mason, 25, and Dawn Pedro, 58, both employees of the Stewart’s Shop.

Investigators are asking anyone who sees a discarded backpack in the area of the store at 116 Main St., or knows what might have become of the item, to call the Rutland Barracks at 802-773-9101.

People also can submit a tip anonymously at https://vsp.vermont.gov/tipsubmit.

Anyone who sees the backpack should not touch it and instead immediately report it to authorities.
