CATTARAUGUS COUNTY — The Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a potential scam circulating in the area.
Individuals are reportedly receiving phone calls from someone falsely claiming to be a supervisor from the Sheriff’s Office.
The scammer informs the recipient that a friend or loved one is in custody at the Cattaraugus County Jail.
They then claim that the incarcerated will be released on an ankle monitor if they send money using Cash App.
The Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Office unequivocally states that this is a scam.
The Sheriff’s Office does not contact individuals in this manner to solicit payments for the release of inmates, and no fees are collected over the phone for such purposes.
Residents are strongly urged not to provide personal information or send money electronically to anyone making such claims.
If you receive a call of this nature, please hang up immediately and do not engage with the caller.
