CLIFTON — New York State Police arrested two men Aug. 14 for third-degree criminal tampering in connection with damaged campaign signs.

Christopher J. Backus, 56, of Harrisville, and William J. Patterson, 71, of Ogdensburg, were taken into custody following an investigation into vandalism reported the previous day.

Police were notified Aug. 13 at approximately 1:09 p.m. about campaign signs for Town of Clifton Supervisor being damaged on Tooley Pond Road.

The investigation revealed that Backus and Patterson were responsible for the damage, having repeatedly run over the signs with their vehicles.

Both men were arrested and processed, then released on appearance tickets requiring them to return to Town of Clifton Court in September.
