Utica man charged after handgun passed to minor during police response

UTICA — A 26-year-old man faces multiple weapons charges after police say he passed a loaded handgun to a minor during a police response on Court Street.

Utica Police units were dispatched to 811 Court St. at approximately 9 p.m. Aug. 13 regarding a report of a man waving a handgun.

A description of a shirtless male with dark sweatpants was provided to officers.

The first arriving officer witnessed a male matching the description walking on the sidewalk.

As the officer approached the male, it was evident he did not possess the handgun, however another person next to him began to walk away in a manner that raised the officer’s suspicions.

The second male was covering his waistband area and turning his body away from the officer as if trying to hide something.

As the officer attempted to speak with this person, he fled on foot, resulting in a short foot pursuit.

The male was soon detained and after conducting a frisk, a loaded 9mm handgun was located.

The person and the handgun were secured and transported to the Utica Police Department.

Officers reviewed video that showed the handgun being passed from the shirtless male to the individual who was ultimately found with it.

The shirtless male was then also taken into custody and transported to the Utica Police Department.

Trimard Campbell, 26, of Utica was charged with criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree, criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree, criminal possession of a firearm and criminal sale of a firearm to a minor.

The individual found with the gun was learned to be 17 years of age.

The minor’s identity will not be released but was charged with criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree, criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree and criminal possession of a firearm.
