Willimantic man charged with assault after knife slashing

WILLIMANTIC — A 49-year-old man is in custody after allegedly slashing another person with a kitchen knife during an argument Wednesday afternoon.

Alberto Hernandez was arrested after the incident at 22 North Street at approximately 2:40 p.m., according to the Willimantic Police Department.

Officers found an injured victim at the scene and provided aid for non-life-threatening injuries before requesting medical assistance.

Police said Hernandez engaged in an argument with the victim before allegedly brandishing a large kitchen knife and slashing the victim on the right side of the head.

Hernandez attempted to flee but was quickly tracked down by officers and taken into custody.

The victim was transported to Windham Hospital for treatment of head wounds and was released a couple of hours later.

Hernandez was charged with first-degree assault, carrying a dangerous weapon and breach of peace.

He is being held on $250,000 cash or surety bond.

Police said the incident appears to be isolated and there is no ongoing threat to the public.
