EAST HAVEN — A 65-year-old man died Tuesday after falling from his electric bicycle while attempting to remove debris from a roadway, police said.

East Haven Police and Fire Department personnel responded to the area of Mill Street and Foxon Road at approximately 3:25 p.m. for a report of an unresponsive man who had fallen from his bicycle.

Fire Department medics performed life-saving measures before transporting the victim to Yale New Haven Hospital, where he died from his injuries.

Surveillance video showed the bicyclist traveling northbound on Mill Street when he stopped to pick up what appeared to be a 2×4 left in the roadway.

As the bicyclist attempted to continue riding while balancing the piece of lumber, he lost his balance and fell off the bike, tumbling down an embankment and sustaining severe injuries.

A passerby found the bicyclist unresponsive and called 911, performing CPR until medics arrived.

No other vehicles or individuals were involved in the accident, police said.

The victim’s identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
