BOSTON — A Weymouth man was arrested on firearm charges following a traffic stop in South Boston on Monday night.

Adamo Da Silveira, 25, was taken into custody by officers assigned to District C-6 after police recovered a large capacity firearm during the incident.

The traffic stop occurred around 9:20 p.m. when officers observed a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed from Old Colony Avenue toward the Columbia Road Rotary.

Police said the vehicle was weaving in and out of traffic and changing lanes at an unsafe speed.

Officers activated their emergency lights and sirens to initiate a traffic stop, and the vehicle stopped in the area of Columbia Road and Day Boulevard.

Police determined that Da Silveira’s license was suspended and that the passenger also did not have an active license.

Both occupants were asked to exit the vehicle.

During a motor vehicle inventory search, officers recovered a firearm from a backpack inside the vehicle.

District C-6 detectives responded to the scene and identified the weapon as a Glock 17 with one round in the chamber and fourteen rounds in a magazine capable of holding seventeen total rounds.

Da Silveira is expected to be arraigned in South Boston District Court on charges including operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license, possession of a large capacity firearm, carrying a firearm without a license, possession of ammunition without an FID card and defacement of a firearm serial number.
