CHARLESTON — A 24-year-old Jay man faces multiple charges following a single vehicle rollover crash on Vermont Route 5A early Monday morning.
Vermont State Police Derby Troopers, Charleston Fire, and Newport Ambulance responded to the crash at 1:55 a.m. Aug. 12.
Upon arrival, troopers found a 2010 Chevrolet Silverado with massive damage and several downed trees in the roadway.
The operator, identified as John Armstrong, had extricated himself from the vehicle prior to the arrival of responders.
Armstrong immediately became noncompliant with the responding trooper and attempted to leave the scene before being forcibly detained.
He was transported to North Country Hospital by EMS for suspected minor injuries.
At the hospital, Armstrong became violently combative over several hours, attempting to assault healthcare providers and a security officer.
Armstrong also assaulted several troopers, including spitting directly in the face of one officer.
He destroyed and defeated several hospital restraint systems and had to be repeatedly forcibly restrained by numerous personnel.
Preliminary crash investigation revealed Armstrong had been traveling north on Route 5A while impaired when he struck a tree and rolled his vehicle.
The vehicle sustained total damage and Armstrong was not wearing a seatbelt.
Armstrong is charged with DUI, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, assault on a protected professional and unlawful mischief.
He is due in court at a later date.
No major injuries were sustained during the incident.
