MILFORD — A 44-year-old man was arrested early Saturday morning after allegedly breaking into a vehicle and firing a handgun multiple times near a local school.

The Penobscot Regional Communications Center received a 911 call at approximately 12:54 a.m. on Aug. 9 from a resident on County Road reporting “very loud bangs” and unusual noises outside his home.

The caller checked his security cameras and observed a male subject on his property entering his vehicle.

A Penobscot County deputy assigned to Milford responded to the scene.

Investigation revealed that the suspect had entered the caller’s vehicle, found a handgun inside, and discharged the firearm multiple times, causing damage to the vehicle.

The subject fled the scene but left the firearm behind in the vehicle.

The communications center then received another call from Freshies store in Milford about a male subject yelling at the location.

The deputy sheriff responded to the store with assistance from Maine State Police.

Brian Coston, 44, was located at the store and determined to be the subject from the County Road incident.

Coston was arrested and charged with possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, a Class B felony, criminal mischief, Class E, and discharge of a firearm within 500 feet of a school, Class E.

The shooting occurred near the Dr. Lewis S. Libby School.

Additional charges may be pending.
