Burlington police officer fires weapon during traffic stop

BURLINGTON — A Burlington police officer fired his duty weapon at a vehicle driver early Sunday morning during a traffic stop.

No one was injured in the incident, which occurred around 12:40 a.m. near 16 Prospect Hill.

The Vermont State Police is investigating the officer-involved shooting following standard protocol.

Burlington officers were responding to a disturbance call and searching for a vehicle connected to the incident when they located it in the Prospect Hill area.

During the interaction with the vehicle, one officer discharged his weapon.

The Vermont State Police Major Crime Unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

The state police Crime Scene Search Team processed the location where the incident occurred.

The officer involved has been placed on paid administrative leave by the Burlington Police Department.

Vermont State Police will release the officer’s identity after 24 hours.

When the investigation is complete, the case will be turned over to the Vermont Attorney General’s Office and the relevant State’s Attorney’s Office for independent reviews of the use of force.
