STRATFORD — A 6-year-old boy fell into the Housatonic River on Wednesday at approximately 1:30 p.m. while walking on the Birdseye Boat Ramp.
Captain Jerry Pinto reported that despite efforts by a United Illuminating employee who jumped into the river to save the boy, the child has not been found.
Public safety assets from Stratford, Bridgeport, Fairfield, Westport, Shelton, Trumbull, Guilford, Monroe, Connecticut State Police and the Coast Guard responded to the scene.
Boats, jet skis, drones, dive teams and a helicopter were deployed in the search.
A Coast Guard cutter and the Stratford Fire Marine unit will continue searching overnight.
The Stratford Fire Department will reassemble a command post at the Birdseye Boat Ramp on Thursday morning to resume search efforts.
