Springfield police seize loaded firearm during traffic stop

SPRINGFIELD — At approximately 5:50 p.m. Thursday, members of the Springfield Police C3 Neighborhood Stabilization Bureau seized a loaded firearm after conducting a traffic stop on Maple Street.

A few minutes earlier, officers were in the area of School and High Streets when they observed a vehicle without its headlights on in the rain run a red light while speeding.

The vehicle’s registration was also revoked.

Officers conducted a traffic stop on the 0-100 block of Maple Street.

The driver, later identified as Luis Ortiz, did not have a license.

During a search of the vehicle officers located a loaded firearm inside the car.

Officers placed Ortiz under arrest.

The 28-year-old Springfield man is charged with carrying a loaded firearm without a license, carrying a firearm without a license, operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license, operating a motor vehicle with a suspended registration and operating an uninsured motor vehicle.
