FAIRFIELD — A 28-year-old Old Town man was arrested Friday on a charge of gross sexual assault involving a child under 10 years old.

Corey M. Cox was taken into custody Aug. 1 following a two-year investigation that began in August 2023.

Detective Shanna Blodgett of the Fairfield Police Department was initially assigned to investigate the complaint involving Cox and the child.

Over the course of two years, Blodgett worked with the Department of Health and Human Services, the Children’s Advocacy Center of Kennebec and Somerset Counties, and the Somerset County District Attorney’s Office to gather information.

In May, Somerset County Sheriff’s Office Detective Jeremy Leal, who is assigned as an investigator with the Somerset County District Attorney’s Office, was asked to assist in the investigation.

After approximately two months, Leal used information obtained by Blodgett to gather further evidence that supported obtaining an arrest warrant for Cox.

Cox’s bail was initially set at $10,000 cash, with conditions that he not have contact with anyone under 18 years old and no contact with the victim or the victim’s immediate family members.

Cox made his initial court appearance Monday at the Somerset County Unified Criminal Court.

His bail was reduced to $2,500 cash.

He currently remains incarcerated at the Somerset County Correctional Facility.

The Somerset County District Attorney’s Office will be reviewing the case, and additional charges may be forthcoming.
