Fatal crash near Fort Fairfield kills 1, injures 3

FORT FAIRFIELD — A two-vehicle crash on Route 1A near the Limestone town line killed one person and injured three others Tuesday morning.

The Fort Fairfield Police Department responded to the crash at approximately 10:11 a.m. on Limestone Road.

A 2012 Chevrolet Impala traveling south drove onto the dirt shoulder, then overcorrected and crossed into the northbound lane, striking a 2023 Chevrolet Trailblazer, police said.

The Impala’s occupants, 25-year-old Amber Turcotte and 37-year-old Casey Clayton, were ejected from the vehicle and sustained life-threatening injuries.

Turcotte was transported to A.R. Gould Hospital and Clayton was taken to Cary Medical Center.

The Trailblazer’s driver, 60-year-old Carrie Smith-Gagne, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Trailblazer’s passenger, 72-year-old Pierre Gagne, sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to Cary Medical Center.

Smith-Gagne and Gagne were both wearing seatbelts, police said.

All individuals involved are residents of Limestone.

The crash remains under investigation by Sgt. Jesse Cormier of the Fort Fairfield Police Department.

Fort Fairfield Fire and Rescue, Presque Isle Fire and Rescue, Caribou Fire and Ambulance, a Presque Isle Police Department crash reconstructionist, U.S. Border Patrol and Maine State Police assisted at the scene.
