BOSTON — Drug Control Unit officers from three Boston police districts arrested two suspects Monday on firearm and drug charges after observing suspicious activity at a busy intersection.
Daryl Elliot-Powell, 23, of Mattapan, and a 17-year-old juvenile female were taken into custody around 12:22 p.m. at Massachusetts Avenue and Albany Street.
Officers from Districts B-3 (Mattapan), E-18 (Hyde Park), and A-7 (East Boston) were on patrol when they observed a large group congregating at the intersection.
A female was seen holding money in her hand while two individuals on a moped drove onto the sidewalk and approached her.
When officers identified themselves as Boston police, the group began to flee.
Officers grabbed the handlebars of the moped to stop the suspects, and the operator attempted to accelerate but was quickly removed from the vehicle.
Both occupants were handcuffed as two backpacks fell from the moped.
One backpack contained a plastic bag of heroin, while the second bag was unusually heavy and contained a firearm upon inspection.
The second backpack also held three plastic bags of crack cocaine.
Police recovered a Ruger 9mm pistol with ten rounds in the magazine.
The drugs weighed 5.9 grams of heroin and 8.6 grams of crack cocaine.
Both suspects are expected to be arraigned in Roxbury District Court on charges of unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, possession with intent to distribute Class A substances, and possession with intent to distribute Class B substances.
