STERLING — A 47-year-old Sterling woman was arrested on drug possession charges following an investigation that began during a probation check, the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office announced Monday.
Brandy J. Disbennett was charged with criminal possession of controlled substance in the seventh degree, a misdemeanor, Sheriff Brian Schenck said.
The arrest stems from a July 10 incident when Cayuga County deputies assisted the Wayne County Probation Office with an investigation in Sterling.
During that investigation, the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office took Disbennett into custody on welfare fraud charges.
A search of Disbennett revealed an unknown substance believed to be an illegal narcotic, deputies said.
The substance was collected and tested positive for fentanyl or methamphetamine, according to the sheriff’s office.
Disbennett turned herself in to sheriff’s deputies at the Public Safety Building on July 15 at approximately 4:30 p.m.
She was processed and released on an appearance ticket to appear in Sterling Town Court on July 23 at 6:00 p.m.
Anyone with information regarding this incident is encouraged to contact the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office at 315-253-1222.
