WELLESLEY — A man died Friday after his vehicle veered off Forest Street and struck a tree in what police believe may have been caused by a medical emergency.

The Wellesley Police Department received a 911 call at 3:12 p.m. reporting a single-car crash on Forest Street between Abbott Road and Berkshire Road.

Officers arriving at the scene found the vehicle had left the roadway and collided head-on with a tree.

The male driver was trapped in the vehicle and in traumatic arrest when emergency personnel arrived.

Emergency crews worked to extricate the man from the car before Coastal Paramedics and Wellesley firefighters performed life-saving measures.

The victim was transported by Coastal ambulance to Wellesley High School athletic fields, where Boston Med Flight had landed for a medical intercept.

He was then transported by ambulance to an area hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

Forest Street remained closed for several hours while the Wellesley Police Crash Reconstruction Unit and detectives investigated the scene.

Preliminary investigation suggests the driver may have experienced a medical emergency that caused him to lose control of the vehicle before it left the roadway and struck a tree on the east side of Forest Street.

The crash remains under investigation.

Police are withholding the name and age of the victim pending proper notifications.
