BREWER — Two Old Town residents were arrested on drug charges after police found them with a 5-year-old child in a closed city park late Tuesday night.
Officer Paul Hacker was conducting a routine nighttime check of Brewer City Parks at approximately 11:27 p.m. July 29 when he observed a suspicious vehicle parked at Indian Trail Park.
The park closes approximately 30 minutes after sunset.
Hacker made contact with the occupants: Richard Newell, 48, of Old Town; Amanda Brothers, 42, of Old Town; and a 5-year-old child.
Sgt. Scott Jones and Cpl. Chris Woodman arrived to assist Hacker.
During the investigation, officers located and seized illegal drugs, specifically cocaine base.
Brothers attempted to conceal drug paraphernalia in the child’s car seat, police said.
Both Newell and Brothers were arrested and transported to the Penobscot County Jail.
The child was unharmed and released into the custody of the Department of Health and Human Services.
Brothers was charged with unlawful possession of Schedule W drugs, endangering the welfare of a child and falsifying physical evidence, all Class D felonies.
Newell was charged with unlawful possession of Schedule W drugs, a Class D felony.
