PORTLAND — A man who fired multiple gunshots in a wooded area was taken into custody Saturday night after a five-hour standoff with police.
Portland Police responded at 4:38 p.m. to the wooded area off Bishop Street for a report of a male with a gun who had fired multiple gunshots.
The department’s Special Reaction Team responded to the scene.
The nearby University of New England campus was put on lockdown and area residents were advised to stay indoors.
At approximately 9:30 p.m., the suspect, who had been experiencing a mental health crisis earlier in the day, was taken into custody by Portland Police and transported for a mental evaluation.
No charges have been filed at this time.
The Maine State Police and Brunswick Police Department provided drone assistance during the investigation.
