BOSTON — Roxbury officers recovered a large capacity firearm following a ShotSpotter activation early Saturday morning.

At about 3 a.m., officers assigned to District B-2 responded to the area of 32 Gleason Street for a ShotSpotter activation.

Upon arrival, officers observed a large group of people congregating in the middle of the street and blocking traffic.

As officers exited their cruiser, the group began to disperse, and an individual was seen with his left hand inside of his pocket.

Officers could also see that the individual had an empty holster clipped to the right side of his pants.

Officers attempted to detain the suspect who began to pull his arms away from them.

The suspect was placed into handcuffs, and a large crowd began to form.

Officers from District B-3 and specialized units converged on the area to assist with the hostile crowd.

While walking the suspect to their cruiser, a key fob fell from the suspect’s pocket.

Officers clicked the key fob and observed a vehicle parked next to a fire hydrant across from 32 Gleason Street.

After further investigation, a firearm was recovered from inside the vehicle.

District B-2 detectives arrived on scene and located a spent shell casing in the rear of the address.

Detectives determined the firearm to be a Smith & Wesson Bodyguard 2.0 with one round in the chamber and six rounds in the magazine which was capable of holding twelve rounds.

The suspect was transported back to District B-2 to complete the booking process.

The suspect refused to cooperate with officers and began to swing his fists at them.

Additional charges were sought for assault and battery on a police officer.

Joshua Cooper, 36, of Stoughton, was arrested and is expected to be arraigned in Dorchester District Court on charges including possession of a large capacity firearm, carrying a loaded firearm without a license, carrying a firearm without a license, possession of ammunition without an FID card, resist arrest and three counts of assault and battery on a police officer.
