SOUTH BURLINGTON — A 35-year-old inmate has been charged with hate crimes and assault after attacking three women at the Chittenden Regional Correctional Facility on July 18.

Kerri Yaqoob faces charges of simple assault, aggravated assault and hate motivated crime following the 4 p.m. incident, according to Vermont State Police.

Police said Yaqoob assaulted Aaliyah Johnson, 23, by throwing boiling water in her face.

Yaqoob also struck Amy Mollinson, 33, in the head with an iPad, police said.

A third victim, Brandi Munger, 34, was burned with boiling water during the attack.

Investigators determined that weeks before the assault, Yaqoob had been moved due to racially motivated comments she made toward Johnson.

Police said the assault appeared to be motivated in part by Johnson’s race and the fact that Mollinson was defending Johnson against Yaqoob.

Yaqoob was issued a citation on July 23 to appear in Chittenden County Superior Court.
