Cumberland man arrested at JFK airport on sexual assault warrant

CUMBERLAND — A 27-year-old East Longmeadow, Massachusetts man was arrested July 11 while attempting to board an international flight at JFK International Airport on a Cumberland Police Department warrant.

Assad Awan, part-owner of Anis Pizza and Seafood at 1182 High Street, was wanted on charges including two counts of first-degree domestic sexual assault, two counts of domestic assault by strangulation, two counts of domestic simple assault/battery and two counts of domestic disorderly conduct.

The victim was a juvenile personally known to Awan, and the alleged criminal conduct occurred earlier this year, according to police.

Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Police captured Awan at JFK International Airport.

The Rhode Island Division of Sheriffs returned Awan to Rhode Island over the weekend.

Awan was arraigned Monday and is being held without bail at the Adult Correctional Institutions.
